Gina Gershon as Donatella Versace in Upcoming TV Bio-Pic
Fans of the cult classic film Showgirls have something new to look forward to on October 5, 2013 on Lifetime. Gina Gershon, aka Cristal Connors, will add another strong iconic female portrayal to her repertoire — Donatella Versace, the sister of tragically slain fashion god, Gianni Versace. The TV movie bio-pic House of Versace is based on the book “House of Versace: The Untold Story of Genius, Murder and Survival” by Deborah Ball. Ball has been a business journalist in Europe for 15 years for the Wall Street Journal covering the business, finance, and political topics as well as the European luxury goods sector.
Joining Gershon in the Lifetime movie is the always radiant Raquel Welch as Donatella’ Aunt Lucia, Enrico Colantoni (Veronica Mars) as Gianni Versace, and Colm Feore as her older brother, Santo, who is the president and co-CEO of the Versace label. Sara Sugarman, the eye behind Lindsay Lohan’s Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen directed House of Versace.
The movie portrays the shocking murder in 1997 of Gianni Versace by a crazed stalker and the thrusting of his sister and muse, Donatella, into the spotlight and ultimately as head of the fashion empire. Critics worldwide were unkind to Donatella; who, under the pressure, struggled with drug addiction and nearly bankrupting the company.
As for how Gershon transformed into Donatella? Gina tells the New York Post, ‘I watched and tried to get her tonality’ by studying videos and working with a dialect coach. Kathy Kelso, make-up artist for the leading lady’s transformation says it was achieved by stuffing cotton under her lips, applying heavy eyeshadow, contouring her nose with makeup, lots of tape and glue, and of course the striking wigs to match Versace’s hair.
Watch House of Versace on Lifetime, October 5, 2013 at 8pm (EST) with a documentary on the life of Gianni Versace called Versace: Beyond the Headlines at 10pm immediately after the movie.
