U sually booked more than 2 years in advanced, German tattoo duo Simone Pfaff and Volko Merschky have started something that seems to have taken on a life of its own—even becoming a challenge on SPIKE TV’s show Ink Master.  When the two met in art school, exploring themes and styles in their drawing and painting, they never thought it would develop into what is now called Realistic Trash Polka [also known as Trash Polka].  “There was no name for the style we were creating.  So we chose to call it Realistic Trash Polka,” explains Pfaff.

Realistic Trash Polka, according to Pfaff and Merschky is “realism and trash; the nature and the abstract; technology and humanity; past, present, and future. Opposites that they are trying to urge into a creative dance to harmony and rhythm in tune with the body.”

The style combines realistic and abstract elements in a collage-like mix rendered in black & grey with accents of red tones.  It stylistically shares graphic similarities to Russian Constructivism of the late 1910s and 1920s as well as the 1980s Deconstruction.  Pfaff and Merschky will often work on a piece together with their style almost indistinguishable from each other.  “We don’t need to explain ideas anymore to each other, we automatically sense and get it,” says Merschky.

Trash Polka maybe young, only about five years old, but it seems to be quickly spreading across Europe and the United States. Other artists have adopted the elements and are offering their own take on the new style.
