D esigner Ronen Sas has a deep love of all things Classical.  When living in New York, the designer would frequent the Metropolitan Museum of Art, spending hours in the Wrightsman gallery, wandering and drawing in the historic rooms.  It was during these visits that Sas decided that he needed to embark on his own Grand Tour, something that was a common part of education and breeding among the wealthy in the 19th century.Starting his journey close, Sas first visiting the Frick, then America’s castles, the Newport mansions.  After exploring America, he moved on to Europe with multiple visits to Paris and England and beyond.  During his travels, Sas carefully documented the decoration, furnishings, art, and design of the past.

Sas’ final destination was old Tel Aviv, his hometown.  It was there that he settled in a 1920s building.  “Some of the first modern buildings created in Tel Aviv were built in the 1920s.  They mixed European styles with local Middle Eastern influences,” says Sas.  It was this type of building that suited the designer, “It was some of the only buildings with classically tall windows and ceilings.”  But the buildings lacked the grand ornaments of past periods.

The classical bones provided Sas a place to began to design, building and constructing his “Hotel Violette”.  The flat white walls of two small rooms were transformed with custom wood panels, adorned with historic ornament from JP Weaver Company in California, one of the few companies producing composition (compo) ornament today.

Sas did not stop with the architectural ornamented panels in the Louis XV style, in addition he commissioned oil painting reproductions from some of his favorite museums, scoured flea markets for Revival pieces in the US and Europe and custom designed a fireplace surround in the French style.

Sas maybe in Tel Aviv, but Paris can be where you are.
