Southern gentleman and top hospitality designer Gary Inman needs to discover a place. “Each building resonates with its own energy and history to be uncovered,” says Inman. Sentiments the twenty-year veteran fashion, furniture, and hospitality designer has been extolling his entire career. It is both exciting and a curse for Inman that “genius loci,” a term Christian Norberg-Shultz popularized in the architectural lexicon from a book of the same name [1979], is currently popular. “I am heartened other designers have discovered something I have kept close to my heart. But, I also admit that I feel a slight loss that it is not mine alone.” Even when being critical, the kind Inman seems apologetic.

Inman who spent part of his career in historic preservation has a well-earned respect for past era styles. “People think contemporary design and traditional design don’t mix but for me they are all part of the same conversation,” he says. Inman continues, “When I begin a project, I research everything I can about the place–its history, its stories, its people. I strive to imbue the essential essence of place within each project in a way that respects the past while creating something completely of our time.”

Recently announced as Vice-President of Hospitality at Baskervill, one of America’s earliest firms and an international “Giant of Hospitality” for more than a decade, Inman and the team are working on no less than 115 projects with more added each day. “It has been thrilling to join a progressive firm whose hospitality business is so brisk,” he says. Approximately fifty-percent of Baskervill’s projects consist of hospitality and Inman has been tasked with expanding the company’s luxury boutique market share.

“I believe design is a service and it is our privilege to help clients uncover their truth in form,” says Inman. It is this belief that has kept Inman from having a single style, opting instead to create what is needed by the client and responding to the building’s “place.” The only common thread within his work is an element of luxury and quality. “Quality is timeless,” he says, a notion that Inman expresses when discussing his favorite fashion heroes like Chanel or Yves Saint
Laurent.
