P aul Smith, the English design house known for mixing bold pattern with classic-cut British clothing, has renewed their relationship with Anglepoise, the 80 year old English lighting manufacturer best known for their iconic spring-action desk lamp.  Smith’s Edition Two infuses the anthropomorphic lighting classic with a combination of Fall acid colors set against a background of grey tones.  The sumptuous jewel-like colors are smart, restrained, sophisticated with an added accent of orange—an element of surprise so intrinsic to Paul Smith’s style.

Edition One, a top seller for Anglepoise, is a sunny combination of cornflower, fuchsia and lime.

“After the success of my first Anglepoise lamp, I’m very happy to be working with them again on a fresh version. I hope everyone likes it!” Paul explains.

“It’s a rare thing to encounter a designer like Paul Smith who can inject modernity and new relevance into a classic design without in some way compromising the integrity of the original design,” says executives at Anglepoise.

The Anglepoise lamp, the brainchild of car suspension engineer George Carwardine, tested a theoretical idea of counterbalancing weights using springs, cranks and levers. The initial design was adapted in 1935 for the domestic market and later refined, most recently by industrial designer Sir Kenneth Grange. The iconic design was specially adapted for use in World War II bombers, appeared on a British stamp, shown in the Victoria & Albert Science Museum’s traveling exhibit Lightopia and the Design Museum used it as one of six design stories that illustrate the impact of contemporary design on everyday lives.

The Type 75™ Desk Lamp – Paul Smith – Edition Two is now available for purchase online at Anglepoise’s new website http://us.anglepoise.com for $240 and at select retailers.
