Millennials Discover Corian®

Called by Forbes magazine “a living blueprint for the 21st-century designer,” Joe Doucet and his team do it all: product design, packaging, architecture, retail design, furniture and technology at his firm Joe Doucet x Partners (JDXP).  So, when Doucet and his colleges where asked by the Fortune 500 company, DuPont™, to employ their premiere solid-surface product Corian® to create an installation showcasing its possibilities and new colors recently at New York Design Week, they were up for the challenge.  The resulting installation, a bar, produced by Associated Fabrication, LLC., New York’s leading Corian® fabricator, was shown at the Astor Place Plaza Design Pavilion, strategically located near the young students of Cooper Union and NYU.

The two-armed bar was built using thermoforming, a process those familiar with the TV show “Tanked” might have observed; constructing aquariums by melting large sheets of Plexiglas over shaped-wood molds slowly in a room-sized oven then cooled and glued together.  Associated Fabrication uses the same process on sheets of solid-surface Corian®, allowing designers to imagine almost any shape.  “We take the heated pieces of Corian® and then put them together over a wood structure for support—gluing and sanding them to create what appears to be a monolithic surface,” explains Bill Mowat, Co-founder of Associated Fabrication.

Blur Bar, the name of the installation, occupied 1600 square-feet and was 30-foot long.  It featured several phone recharging stations along its counter top in two flavors: one an inset USB which is easily removed and plugged into your phone and the second a titanium ring routed into the top surface where your phone automatically recharges when laid within the ring’s surface (assuming your phone has that capability.)  The installation included several custom round stools made of Corian® with lift-holes routed-out of the sides to move the heavy piece of furniture as well as a concave top for seat comfort.

Part of the installation’s purpose was to introduce DuPont™ Corian®’s six new deeper colors to their popular line and seven new colors to the DuPont™ Zodiaq® Quartz Surfaces line to the designer market.  The color improvement technology called Corian® DeepColor™ Technology—like any good corporation it gets its own trade marked name—delivers greater depth of lustrous color, improves ease of fabrication and installation, and reduces scratch appearance by up to 50 percent.  “Corian®’s  color properties are continually improved and we are proud of our newest launch.  The color is deeper and more even throughout,” says Mark Woodman, Design and Color Creative Consultant to DuPont Building Innovations Surfaces.

Woodman also advises Dupont™ on trends and one that he shared, which explained the location choice, was how Corian® was being ‘discovered’ by the Millennial generation.  “Corian® has been around for more than 50 years but Millennials are ‘discovering’ this new material.  They are excited by the homogeneity of the new color options and the monolithic nature of the product.  We see Millennials as a new important market for us,” says Woodman.

Also on hand at the event was Wendy Ann Werner, Digital Marketing Manager at DuPont™, who shared several of the brand’s lesser known facts including the unusual fact that it is Kosher!  This means that the manufacturing procedures and raw materials used in the production of Corian® solid-surfaces have been reviewed by the kosher certification agency, Star-K, and are certified kosher and approved for use in kosher homes.  DuPont™ also holds patents for antimicrobial and antibacterial technology for their surfaces.

Millennials or not, Corian® is a material with staying power.

2016 THE NEW COLORS for CORIAN and ZODIAQ

2016 Color Launch Corian and Zodiaq Full Collection

THE BLUES
Each of these modern blues was created to acknowledge emerging desires for more rich interpretations of blue, with the feel of “near-black.” The blue Corian® and Zodiaq® introductions are sophisticated, rich and classic.
Corian® Deep Inkwell – As it dips both cool and poised, with its subtle movement of blue and black, this is an elegant hue that works with both casual and formal spaces.
Corian® Deep Lapis – Inspired by the precious blue stone for which it is named, this pattern dances before the eye, with vibrant, lively blue particles in a field of black.
Corian® Nightfall – That moment when the evening sky turns to midnight is the inspiration for this intense navy. Its deep color adds a sultry, mysterious trait, while the classic nature of the hue makes it elegant and familiar.
Zodiaq® Indigo Swirl – As though churning in a whirlpool of indigo dye, this pattern brings added dimension to blue with variegation and movement. Ranging from pale blue to deep navy, it is a pattern that offers a new direction for blue and its many design iterations.

THE GREENS & BROWNS
Representing life and growth, earth tones help us to reflect the natural world in our environment. Innate and essential in character and tone, the new Corian® and Zodiaq® colors will help create designs that demonstrate our vital connection to nature.
Corian® Deep Terrain – Grounded, and luxurious, this pattern draws from the sumptuous nature of the Earth. Blending brown, green and gold, it offers a warm luster to spaces and surfaces.
Corian® Sand Storm – As if blended by nature, the swirling white and tans merge to form a vibrant, striated design that is simultaneously new and traditional.
Zodiaq® Evergreen – Inspired by the timeless look of green stone, this pattern adds brightness, as well as depth, with multiple greens, undulating with white. Neither too dark, nor too light, the classic look conjures elegant spaces, antiques and prized possessions.
Zodiaq® Mossy Oak – This color represents the beauty of the forest. Rich golden brown swirls with deep, leafy greens illuminated with flashes of white veining, as when the sun filters through a canopy of leaves.
Zodiaq® Provence – Inspired by time-worn stone paths, this hue suggests summers abroad with quiet tones of gray, swirling with touches of black. It is an escape from the every day, while maintaining a classic color combination.

THE GRAYS
An evolution of lighter gray aesthetics which add elegance and sophisticated warmth to their surroundings, these new darker gray tones convey a touch of prestige and authority, elevating any interior.
Corian® Deep Cloud – A contemplative, mid-range gray hue that also is complex. It floats somewhere between light and dark to offer a classically neutral ground for design combinations and other colors.
Corian® Deep Smoky Pearl – As if bits of pearl were unearthed in a swirling mineral landscape, this pattern’s subtle gray glimmers with light particles, and moves with monochromatic eddies. Characteristic of natural excavations, it adds a level of refinement to surfaces and the neutrality of gray.
Corian® Deep Titanium – This gray has great depth and an undercurrent of power. This is a virtually indestructible hue. Taking its style from its metallic namesake, it makes a bold, singular color statement. But its strength balances with other hues and patterns.
Zodiaq® Concrete Carrara – Gray with a slightly playful side, this pattern is a lighthearted take on natural stone with light veining. The mid-range ground color, with small, darker particulates, creates a simple design aesthetic.
Zodiaq® Onyx Carrara – A quintessential color and pattern, this near-black dappled with white veining is a most classic pattern, indeed. Robust in color, graceful in patterning and instantly classic, it creates an atmosphere of timeless beauty.

THE WHITES
These new whites, neither too warm nor too cool, were created to balance the designed setting with ease. The appeal of simple white is met with new values and patterns that add to interior designs of all sizes.
Corian® Modern White – Crisp and contemporary, this white conjures the simple classicism of marble, the edginess of modern architecture, and the clean background of a museum’s wall. It balances between cool and warm, offering just the right “color space” between. Destined to be a perennial favorite, this new white adds to a growing collection of white solids and patterns that are useful, as well as intriguing.
Zodiaq® Blue Carrara – Delicate blue veining in white creates a recognizable, yet instantly new pattern. The gracious swirls add the fresh look of water and air for trend-forward aesthetics.
