B ackpacking across Europe once meant clove cigarettes, patchouli oil, questionable beaded dreads and sketchy barrack-like accommodations at each country’s local youth hostel.  But, the London-based company, Generator Hostels Ltd. has been working to change that dated notion.  Teaming up with the Toronto firm, DesignAgency (see our article from 2013 on DesignAgency The Best Part of Interior Design Magazine This Month: Special Feature) under design lead Anwar Mekhayech, recently won top honors in the Guestrooms/Suite category of this year’s 11th Annual Hospitality Design Awards.

Located in the trendy Paris 10th Arrondissement, the hostel opened it doors in February of 2015.  The space features one of Generator’s public spaces, a concept at the core of all their hostels, as well as collaborations with artists like industrial designer Romain Guillet and Dutch designer CEIZER to bring local flavor.

The reception is adorned with bespoke vintage-style signage, petrified moss plant “G” sculpture, lounge seating and a Mondrian-inspired reception desk. A metal and wood staircase creates the third floor space.  A bar, located on the first floor, pulled its inspiration from the Paris Metro and uses original designed tile for the dance floor area.  The hostel has a spacious all day brasserie called Café Fabien with a garden facing conservatory.
