Have It Your Way

B outique Hotel design is reshaping and redirecting global hospitality design and travel expectations. “Unique,” “ local,” and “authentic,” have long characterized boutique hotels and are now the primary focus and aspiration of branded and independent hotels alike across all markets. The recent Boutique Design New York (BDNY) conference held this year November 7-9, underscored this paradigm shift. The continual phrases uttered during the event?: the admittedly overused terms “curated” and “bespoke” to describe the ever expanding capacity for customization within the industry. Lecture topics such as “Tell Me a Story: Concepts and Processes to Create Best-Selling Spaces for Clients and Guests “pervaded the conference. “Have your way,” is no longer just a fast-food mantra but is an omnipresent reality within hospitality design and manufacturing.

Less expected were presentations such as “Cuba: What’s Ahead: Who’s News and What You Can Do Now,” advocated for cultural sensitivity, a trait that has traditionally not been the focus of hotel design. Representatives from the industry’s top design firms and hoteliers are increasingly embracing regionalism and place-based experiences in terms of their culinary, design, and amenities approach.

BDNY yielded few new trends in terms of product design, in part because the focus has shifted from designer collections to designer’s curating their own collections. Certainly celebrated designers such as Thomas O’Brien, Roger Thomas, and Stacey Garcia were showcasing their latest work, but the cult of celebrity has waned in favor of a more “Warholian” (Warhol-like) approach where every designer gets their 15 minutes. One trend that did standout was luxury; luxurious materials, bespoke craftsmanship, and more than a little bling were on display for recession-weary hospitality designers and hoteliers who are riding the new wave of optimism and expansion.
