Fresh Talent: The Mother-Daughter Team of Sormeh Lifestyle
W hat happens when you take two strong, independent women from different generations and have them design a single space? If those women are Paiman and Sormeh Salimpour, you are left with the perfect balance of World Traveler and Modern Loft—”Modern Ancient.” The mother-daughter firm, Sormeh Lifestyle, with offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles, capitalize on the ladies’ diverse design passions to create their signature “undecorated” style.
Mother Paiman’s extensive travels greatly influences her work. “I’m most moved by the many cultures and fantastic locations of the world: Italy’s Villa D’Este, Japan’s Kyoto Gardens, Spain’s Moorish Gardens, the Paris Opera House, Luxembourg, Versailles, and Hong Kong all play a part in my design. I love the high-culture and the street life of these places,” says Paiman. By mixing these elements she strives to create something new and surprising.
Watching her mom live and breath the craft, Sormeh grew up utterly engulfed in the world of design. Her own career began as an intern at fashion PR firm People’s Revolution, and then as an assistant to celebrity stylist Monica Rose where she worked closely with such celebrity clients as Kourtney, Khloe and Kim Kardashian, Keri Hilson, and Mindy Kaling. With fashion still playing a large part of her life today, Sormeh draws design inspiration from the likes of Diane von Furstenberg and Yves Saint Laurent. “Although I am completely and unquestionably feminine,” she says, “I also have an edgy and somewhat playful side to me.”
Combining Paiman’s World-style and extensive experience with Sormeh’s fresh and modern outlook, the two employ local artisan sources, an attention to detail and a soulful approach to create effortless and an “undecorated” feel to their projects. “Life is too short to spend it in bland spaces—and for us well-designed surroundings are the secret recipe to living happy and productive lives,” says Sormeh.
