Episode 032: Rivers Spencer

Growing up in Jackson, Mississippi Rivers Spencer learned the elements of classic Southern design, which has served as her foundation in creating her own timeless style. After graduating from Ole Miss she ventured to the Nation’s Capital for a few years before making the decision to pursue a legal career. She unexpectedly found herself escaping from the stressful preparation of law school by teaching herself to faux finish antique furniture in her grandmother’s garage. Once she realized she had a passion for creating beautiful things, Rivers threw herself headlong into learning every aspect of the design industry.

After traveling the country buying, as well as reading every design book she could get her hands on, she opened her first store in the famous design district on Magazine Street in New Orleans. Outgrowing her first space after only two years in business, Rivers took an icon of New Orleans architecture, the double shotgun, and transformed it into a jewel box showroom to give the feel of a beautifully curated home. Stepping into a home designed by Rivers is like stepping into both the past and present. You will see hints of 18th century walnut combined with white lacquer, gold leaf, and the patina of antiquity which create an interior that is both fresh and timeless. The finished product showcases Rivers’ style which will always be…Timeless, Elegant, Tailored, Fresh.

Rivers also designs a collection of elegantly appointed furniture, the ‘Rivers Spencer Collection,’ which is bench made and hand finished by artisans in the city of New Orleans. In her latest venture, Rivers has partnered with Tritter Feefer Home Collection, an American made furniture company based in Georgia, to create a new line of furniture, ‘Rivers Spencer for Tritter Feefer’, which debuted at High Point Market in Fall 2015. She now has a career she loves, and when she isn’t working with her clients, designing furniture for her collection, or traveling to source antiques, you will find her on the tennis court or at Audubon Park with her black lab, Zeus.

Rivers Spencer Interiors is 3000 square foot retail showroom located in the heart of the design district of Magazine Street – the premier shopping destination in New Orleans. Rivers converted a double shotgun into a elegantly designed showroom which is designed to make the customer feel as though they have entered a typical New Orleans home. The store features a great collection of local artists, antiques, curated vintage, modern pieces, and her own Rivers Spencer Collection that she currently designs and produces in the City of New Orleans. She is the exclusive dealer for Verellen, a handsomely tailored line of upholstery out of High Point, North Carolina, and also has the Magazine Street exclusive for Hickory Chair. The showroom features Visual Comfort lighting and Aerin accessories. While the showroom is fully outfitted, she emphasizes customization and is happy to help you create a piece to your specifications.
