O n visiting Daniella Ohad’s artfully arranged, gallery-like apartment, her deep appreciation for quality design is immediately apparent. The white box interior, filled with some of the greatest hits of modern 20th and 21st-century design, express the historian, educator and writer’s life-long passion. It is this passion that she imparts through her course “Collecting Design: History, Collections & Highlights” offered through the New York School of Interior Design, New York City.

“History is the key to understanding and collecting design. You need to educate yourself, it is not just about how something looks, but why it looks that way and in what context,” says Ohad.

The ten-week course, offered in two sessions is aimed at architects, interior designers, decorators, and art collectors and focuses on collecting modern and contemporary design. Held every Monday or Tuesday (depending on the session), Ohad brings course-goers to some of the most important contemporary showrooms, studios and exhibitions around the city for an intimate look and discussion with top industry guest.

The busy Ohad also offers her course each year in Israel, which has become one of the most significant courses on collecting design in the world, attracting students from around the globe. Ohad, originally from Israel, has worked tirelessly to promote modern design from her native country. Even taking on the representation and promotion of artists like Ayala Serfaty whose cloud-like lighting made in glass and fiberglass have been the sensation of recent design shows and decorator show houses.

Ohad’s devotion to design is so absolute that she publishes a weekly popular design blog Daniella on Design which features history based articles. Ohad recently has taken the success of her collecting course to film, producing two shorts: “Collecting Design: History, Collections and Highlights: Charlotte Perriand and Frank Lloyd Wright” with plans for an entire series.

It is clear, Daniella Ohad lives design and wants to share her passion with those with interest.
