The Furniture of Sossego

With the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil rapidly approaching, it felt like the perfect time to take a look at hot new Brazilian owned furniture showroom, Sossego (pronounced so-SAY-go).   The company, founded in 2015, began after a chance encounter in Ann Arbor, Michigan, between award-winning furniture designer Aristeu Pires and artist/businessman Jonathan Durling.  The two bonded over their love of simple warm modern Brazilian design.  Soon after, Sossego was born and now is the exclusive distributor of Aristeu Pires’ handcrafted line in the USA.

Designer Pires began his career in computer engineering and found a talent for furniture design.  In 2007, only six years after launching his own furniture line, the Gisele chair won Brazil’s prestigious “Museu da Casa Brasileira” award in the furniture category. Each piece is individually handcrafted in southern Brazil of sustainable harvested hardwoods and shipped around the globe.

The product line is tightly edited and each model comfortably sits alongside each other within the group.  The designs have a decisively 50s/60s modern feel, but are subtly renewed with a hint of design to reflect a contemporary life.  The proportion of the wood members are slightly smaller than those of their familial predecessors—creating a more elegant silhouette.  The padding and non-wood components are also brought to a minimum, pushing the trend as far as you can go while still maintaining comfort.

Difficult to make simple, minimal-inspired furniture fresh, Pires manages to do just that.  The pieces feel historically familiar but modern, fresh and different—not an easy feat.  The love of detail, structure and a sense of practicality resonate within each design.  Pieces offered in a variety of woods, finishes and leathers.  Of special interest are the four-seat ylla bench (starting at $3,500 USD list price), the syv table (prices vary based on size and options) and the new maxima stool (starting at $700 USD list price) destine to become a classic.
